The Space Pod was a later addition to Lost in Space. It gave the Robinson's some mobility without having to land the Jupiter 2. It was a low budget version of Trek's transporter (actually, it would have been more expensive because it required an actual prop) Smile.

A couple of years ago, I had a very extensive "build along" thread of this Moebius Models kit with dozens of detailed photos of this project. Unfortunately, that website is gone and so is the host that had those photos Sad. Oh, I still have the photos backed-up somewhere so they aren't lost. But they are buried on a hard drive and not on any current host so I only have these two photos available.

I do want to find those other photos when I have time to search my external drives.

This is also available as a completely painted display piece. Of course, unlike a well built kit, these pre-builts have open seams and aren't quite as well finished...but they do look darn good for the price.

The similarities to the Lost in Space pod and the one for 2001 (which it proudly predates) are obvious, but it also reminds me a bit of Wernher Von Braun's "bottle spacesuit" from the 1950s.

Am I right in assuming that the operator stood up while flying it, similar to the Apollo Lunar Lander?

Yes, consider that the operator would have to change his position to operate the different arms.

Yeah...Irwin Allens designers must have been right on top of things because I think they finalized their design at just about the same time as the Apollo LM.

Partly my fault. I was working for Irwin at that time and I was doodling around with my own idea in my spare time for an idea for an advanced lander for a completely unrelated movie. Irwin was shown it and "co-opted" it. Then the big-wigs started monkeying with it.

You are presuming that Big-Wigs are equal to monkeys, they are not!
