Not exactly science fiction, but not exactly fantasy either. More like X-Men in another dimension, where the weird powers some people possess have been around for a long time, and nobody wants to pass a law to have them locked up or "cured".
Oh, and it's on another planet.
Throw in a lot martial arts and actors flying around on unseen wires and you get this imaginative adventure that, unfortunately, tanked at the box office. The strange powers certain characters have seem remarkably similar to the Force, and the character known as the Avatar is supposed be the One who brings balance to the . . . well, you know the rest.
This was intended to be the first of a trilogy, so the story ends like a cliff hanger with no follow up. Critics hated it and the movie earned less than half its budget back. _________________ ____________

I'm watching trailers today and magnanimously sharing what I find with the good folks here at All Sci-Fi. (If you're not one of the "good folks", you aren't allowed to click on the link below. )
M. Night Shyamalan certainly runs hot and cold when it comes to the success of his movies, but you gotta admit — the "next one" is never much like the "last one", and this one isn't one bit like any of his others.
The trailer gives every indication that the movie is going to knock your socks off.
Sadly, the collective socks of the movie-going public stayed put, and the two follow-up movies that were being planned got unplanned as a result. _________________ ____________
