This is remarkable. The tallest mountain on Earth is about 1/3 the size of the tallest mountain on Mars . . . even though Mars is about 1/3 our size! _________________ ____________

Mountains on Earth are smaller than on Mars because of two main factors.
1) Weathering and erosion are much greater on Earth, mainly due to the thicker (denser) atmosphere and the heavier gravity.
2) Plate tectonics tends to push up and tear down the surface features. There seems to be NO tectonic activity on Mars at present. _________________ There comes a time, thief, when gold loses its lustre, and the gems cease to sparkle, and the throne room becomes a prison; and all that is left is a father's love for his child. |

I wondered if the Moon had any really high mountains, so I looked it up.
By gum, it does! In fact, here's what I found and nasa.gov.

The highest point on the Earth is at the summit of Mount Everest, which is 8,848 meters (29,029 feet) above sea level. The lunar high point is 1938 meters higher than that of the Earth! (Which is 10,786 meters ~ Bud)

Here's a picture of the Moon's highest Mountain.
Just kidding. That's from Destination: Moon, of course. Unfortunately the real "highest mountain" on the Moon looks like a zit from orbit. I mean, damn . . . look at this pitiful thing!
WHAT mountain? Where is it? THAT thing is a mountain?
The reason it's so completely unimpressive is that the slope of the "sides" is only 3°. So, this "highest point" is only an area at the apex of a gentle rise that extends for a long horizontal distance. The view from the top would be about the same as all the boring areas of the Moon we've seen from Apollo photographs.
