Well, pfff!

I was just now checking my list of "View posts since last visit" and had gotten about halfway through the new posts, and when I went back to the list at that point, the list had emptied itself.

Just hit CTRL+F and type today's date in the little box at the bottom of your screen. If you haven't been here in several days, you'll have to search for the earlier dates the hard way.

Whenever I encounter a large list of "new posts" I just copy it and save it as a Word document with "hyperlinks" that will take me right to the threads.

Sounds good. In the meantime, it's great that currently the "view posts since last visit" option leads to a thread called "posts since last visit"... Razz

Wayne, I just realized that there can't have been THAT many new posts on the February 15th when the list suddenly disappeared, because Raj used the original ASF database when he made the finale restoration of All Sci-Fi, the one that had none of the posts added to board while he was struggling to solve the glitches.

So, this version has no post since Sean the Despicable eradicated it from Randy's server on about January 4th.

The first posts after our recovery occurred on February 13th, I think, and that was before most folks even knew we were back on line.

Trust me, you didn't miss many new post when the "new posts" list vanished. Just browse the forums which had posts which were added on-or-after Feb 13th and you'll find them all! Very Happy

I'm greatly relieved. Mr. Green

...and I just got the DEBUG message for this post.

Wow, that's weird. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to those damn DEBUG messages. I typed "test" and hit Submit just now and did NOT get the silly message.

So, I hit edit and changed the message to this one.

I did the same and did get the ERROR. It seems to pop up for new posts but not for edits.

Hopefully you've got it backwards, Wayne. I haven't had it happen a single time for NEW posts, but it does happen SOMETIMES for replies.

Read our messages above, in which you said you DID get the Debug message in the reply you posted, and I said that it was strange that I DIDN'T get the Debug message when I added my own reply.

(And now I'm going to have a few beers to Debug my brain, because this is driving me crazy . . . )

Hopefully, this reply will reach your brain before the beers. Very Happy

When I use the term "new posts", I'm including replies; I'm not speaking of starting new threads. I'm saying that I get the ERROR message only for newly posted comments, and not for editing those posts afterwards.

I stand correct, sir!

Yes, our attempts to edit posts have been working fine all along, even then we couldn't reply OR initiate new threads.

This new problem has been limited to relies, not edits OR thread-starting post. For future reference, let's agree that a "new post" is one that starts a thread, and a "reply" is something added to an existing thread.

Raj is still working on the problem and has done some new things to the board in the last hour that he hopes will fix it. Please let us know it you see the problem again.

Let's test that out.

Success! No ERROR message!

Well, pfff! It happened again! It was about 11:20 pm PST. I had almost finished going through the listings of "View posts since last visit" (last visit being some time earlier today), when I returned to the list and it had deleted itself. If this keeps up, I'll have to resort to one of Bud's approaches. Rolling Eyes

I wondered if there might be a setting in the admin section that would explain the problem. I discovered one setting that said this.

Session Length in Seconds = 3,600

That equals one hour.

I changed it to 21,600 seconds, which is six hours. I then conferred with Raj, and he said the 3,600 seconds setting might be the cause of orzel-w's problem, although he was surprised that I thought ANYBODY ever stayed on All Sci-Fi for six hours! Shocked

I told him I knew of at least one person who does. Me. Very Happy

If anyone has a problem like orzel-w described again, let me know.

One hour can fly by before you realize it. Between checking out each new post, chewing over the material, researching some, preparing replies (including finding and uploading images to an image hosting site), and taking snack and bathroom breaks, an hour is long gone.

So thanks for allowing us more time!

I'm sure the setting for the session length was longer on the version located on Randy's server, and that's why we've didn't encounter the problem back then.

Since All Sci-Fi was set up from scratch with a fresh installation of the PHPbb software, all the settings had to be tinkered with by either Raj or myself.

I'll probably find other settings that aren't quite like Randy had them set on his server. But I'll keep working until I get them all right.
