Bulldogtrekker's wife called me last evening and said that our friend will be in the hospital for the next five days with appendicitis! Sad

The good news is that the doctors think it can be treated with antibiotics, so he won't need surgery. Very Happy

I'm sure the members of All Sci-Fi will post a few encouraging words to Bulldogtrekker here on this thread. As a matter of fact, I called his doctor this morning and asked him to tell BDT that we were all thinking about him.

Unfortunately the man was a bit rude to me. Shocked

Here's his reply.

BDT: The hospital's no place to spend the summer. You know where you belong, so get back here where we can keep an eye on you.

Well said, Sir Wayne! Very Happy

One very unfortunate aspect to BDT's medical incarceration is the fact that his hometown of Columbia, SC, is smack in the middle of the upcoming eclipse's region of totality.

But poor Bulldogtrekker won't be home to see it!

However, since the total eclipse only last about two minutes anyway, perhaps he'll be able to join a friendly crowd of fellow patients on the roof of the hospital so they can all go oow-and-aaw together!

Hey . . . come to think of it, he might be luckier than we realized. Very Happy

Picture the situation on Monday. There our good friend BDT will be ??? surrounded by a few dozen folks wearing those infamous hospital gowns with the open backs, all gazing up at the celestial display above them . . . and completely oblivious to the fact that their southern exposures are on display! Shocked

BDT will have a truly spectacular view! He'll be able to see the sun, the stars ??? and all 27 of the moons around Uranus! Cool

Aw, poor Bulldogtrekker. Hope he gets well soon.

Getting your appendix out is rotten enough when you're a kid, but I think it's supposed to be tricky when you're an adult.

Here I am LIVE! I have already asked Kay to see if the (tiny) TV has a disk player or USB connection in it and it does not.

The appendix did rupture but they are leaving it in place and draining it.

Some of these folks know nothing of the eclipse; I think I might be able to go to the parking lot in a wheelchair to watch the eclipse.

I asked one young lady if she liked star trek cosplay, and she said she remembered watching Star Trek reruns with her grandfather.

Be sure to tell them NOT to look directly at it without the special glasses! CNN interviewed a guy who looked directly at an eclipse several decades ago, and he still has the "flash bulb" spot in his vision to this day!

I can't find a place near me that sells them, and I've read that most places that DID have them are sold out.
Sad

Okay, 2 things. First, congrats to Bulldogtrekker for his speedy recovery (BTW, they're leaving it in? I thought an inflamed appendix, or ruptured one gets removed so it doesn't lead to septic shock).

Second, don't go bothering with special eclipse glasses, just make a pinhole viewer like I'm gonna. way cheaper (free, in fact) and safer.

Welcome to the world of modern medicine, Miss Metropolly, where they don't have to cut you open as often as they used to.

Thank God! Very Happy

As for the eclipse, a camera with a proper filter offers a nice view that looks like this.

____

But there's really not that much to see when you're standing on the ground and looking up at something no bigger than your thumbnail held out at arm's length, even when you're in the zone of totality and using the protective glasses! Sad

And if you take the time to make a pinhole viewer using a cardboard box with a piece of white paper taped on the inside, and a small hole on the opposite side to project an image onto the paper, I know from personal experience that all you get is a fuzzy little shadow image of the sun with a bite taken out of it.

You either have to cut a hole in the box and stick your head inside (as the picture below shows), or you have to leave one side of box open, which let's a lot of light inside and washes out the image! Sad

Either way, I've never been impressed with the results. It's sort of like watching a shadow show with hand gestures on the wall in a darkened room.

So, what I'm going to do is watch the eclipse on my HD television, compliments of the Science Channel, and then go outside to look around at what my subdivision looks like here in Charlotte when it reaches the apex!

WITHOUT look up. Very Happy

I am sitting in a chair and typing. I did not sleep last night.

Yes, I questioned the doctor about why the ruptured appendix shouldn't be removed. He said that it could not be removed laparoscopic (but did not explain why) so it would be too much trouble to remove.

The sooner I get out of this place, the better.

Bud, I like the shadow box suggestion.

I guess Dr. McCoy can't go in through a small incision and nip the appendix off and pull it out if it's already ruptured.

About the "shadow box" (actually a "pinhole viewer"), I didn't invent it, I just found an illustration of how they're made. Very Happy
