There's a niche web site devoted to nothing but serials, aptly named Serial Bowl (serial-bowl.com). It's worth visiting, if for no other reason than to view the 8-page list of titles on DVD. I was amazed to see how many serials have been produced by Republic, Universal, Columbia, and many others. Some are even colorized.

Alltare, the world of serials is amazing!

EVERY genre of action / adventure is there!
Science fiction, superhero, mystery, detective, western, jungle girl and boy scouts!

I've seen most of them, and like most forms of art much of it is crap.....BUT the gems shine out and those are still worth watching.

Thanks for the site!
Gord

I just finished watching the complete COMMANDO CODY SKY MARSHALL OF THE UNIVERSE on Blu-ray. I loved it. It's significantly better than my other serial on BD: FLYING DISC MAN FROM MARS. The nice thing about Commando Cody is that there really is a lot of rocketship action. I especially like the collection of military surplus goodies in Commando Cody. Commando's ship has a nice collection of B-29 pressure bulkheads.

But the serials I've seen so far all contain the exact same formulaic fight scene. The good guy catches a pair of bad guys in an act of mischief. The bad guys always travel in pairs. The good guy will hold them at gunpoint. Shortly thereafter, a bad guy will knock the gun from the hand of the good guy and a fist fight will ensue. I swear it happens in every episode.

Commando Cody is one of the last serials done, and it was not really done in the "cliffhanger" tradition.

It was written so each of the 12 chapters was basicly self contained so they could be shown on television as a series.

The other Rocketman serials are pretty good too, especially KING OF THE ROCKETMEN.

One thing I really got a kick out of was seeing Clayton Moore who played the LONE RANGER and never appeared in public without his mask appearing in the serials as a villain, heavy gunman badguy! His voice is so distinctive!
