Here are a few Galaxy magazine Christmas covers by Ed Emschwiller (February 16, 1925 ??? July 27, 1990). 1951 -- when The Day The Earth Stood Still was released:

From my family to yours

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The BEST Christmas I ever had was that of 1956, when Forbidden Planet was released. I was so enamored of the movie, science fiction, astronomy and space travel that a trend was set. Every Christmas my family got together and conspired to give me a science-and-science-fiction holiday! I still have all of my presents from 1956, and most of the ones from the later years. That first year I received these.

Space posters:

Flying space satellites:

Disneyland TWA Space Liner model and Tomorrowland toys:

So-calledForbidden Planet rifle and pistols:

Forbidden Planet C-57-D ???remote control??? flying saucer:

Cape Canaveral Missile Base (I couldn???t read well, yet, and I thought it said Cape CARNIVAL and wouldn???t even open the box until Boxing Day!):

Superior Space Port set with figures:

Beyond Tomorrow Lunar Space Station with figures:

A metal wall sign with a Robby clone:

Seven different colored Robbys:

A spaceman -inside-Robby (Shades of ending of Disney???s The Black Hole!):

Three different versions of Robby???s jeep:

What a Christmas! I???ll NEVER forget it! The next best year was 1959; the year I got the Disneyland HO scale Alweg monorail. This I no longer have as I sold it to M-G-M who used the guts (the rails and the motors minus the cars) for the maze cars in the very large model of The City in Logan???s Run>

These pictures were taken from various places around the web. My presents are precious to me and are in secure storage.

An amazing post, Butch!

Emerald Duck Call Award

By a strange coincidence I just discovered a Christmas greeting from Bill Malone on Facebook, and he placed some of his own cherished toys from his childhood under the tree for the picture below.

Here's the Holiday message Bill Malone posted on Facebook.

Hey EVERYONE!!!... I've been away from here for a while working on a small film project that I'll share with you all in a few weeks but for now it's Christmas time.

I thought this year I would relive my youth (not that I ever grew up mind you) by putting up a proper Christmas tree and decorations. As I was doing it, it reminded me of all great Christmases that my folks gave me over the years.

In looking around, I found that I still had some of these great gifts and decided put them under the tree. _ "Structo Rocker" dump truck (Got this when I was 5), Robby the Robot tin toy (I was 9... I was thrilled), 4x5 Crown Graphic Press Camera (what an important present I leaned photography with this) and Wollensak Tape recorder (I was a 16 year old rocker ...and this was the MP3 player of its day.)

All of this has really brought home how very lucky I am to have had the parents that I had. They were always struggling for money... They both had to work very hard and these gifts were difficult for them to get... They never let my brother or I know... Bless them both. And bless you all over the holidays...

I corrected my post as, by "accident" I posted the Galaxy 1951 cover as 1961.

(I play Santa and Eadie is my Chief Elf for the local orphanage -- yes they STILL exist -- and she says that one day she'll look like this!)

You tell that young lady she better not look like that, EVER! There's dangers involved that a young girl like her couldn't begin to understand . . . Evil or Very Mad

I mean, just LOOK at that snow-covered roof! She could easily fall! Shocked

On a related note, if I woke up on Christmas morning and found this in the living room, my folks would have to call an ambulance, and I'd hold the record for the youngest heart attack victim in history.

Speaking of Happy Harmonukkah...

In my firm belief that a man can never have too many hobbies, I've been attempting to learn to play the harmonica for about two years.

I got a couple of nice harps for Christmas: a Seydel 1847 Classic in the key of "A" and a Seydel Session Steel in "E".

Here's a very quick demo of the 1847:

If you let things keep playing after that, some of my other attempts will play...which will get progressively worse since these represent my earlier and earlier learning sessions.
