I don't recall ever hearing about The Phantom Creeps (with Bela Lugosi). I'll try to catch it on YouTube sometime.

I completely agree on Alligator People, as discussed elsewhere on the forum. They should have stuck with Dick Smith's makeup work. The Horror of Party Beach critter looks like he should be at Carniv??le in Rio de Janeiro. I liked their line about It Conquered the World: "This thing has a top speed of 1 mph. It couldn't conquer a steep incline."

This photo they used from Unknown Island (1948) appears to be mislabeled.

It's actually the fathers of Godzilla and King (emperor?) Kong discussing sending their kids to camp together!

As a kid I had one criterion for movie monsters that warranted "hiding my eyes": if the creature was not too big to fit through the door in a house. Anything bigger than that wasn't as scary to me and I could watch them "with the naked eye". But anything that could get into my bedroom at night was usually enough to require hiding of the eyes, regardless of how lame the costume may have been.

The picture for The Horror of Party Beach in the article had me humming the "Muppet Show" theme, which can't be good for a monster movie. As for The Phantom Creeps, I've always wondered whether it's one ghostly guy who is tiptoe-ing around, or a whole bunch of nasty jerks who are of a ghostly persuasion...

I have seen both Robot Monster and Sting of Death (yes, therapy helped). How would like to be a fly on the wall discussing the monster design:

Robot Monster:
Creature Designer: "All the costume department had was a gorilla costume without the mask and a space helmet."
Producer: "Don't apologize, I'm sure you can make it work."

Sting of Death:
Producer to Creature Designer: "Sorry kid, but after paying the actors and Neil Sedaka to sing 'Do the Jellyfish, all that is left is $5 for the monster costume." (Opens his wallet and hands over a five dollar bill). "And I'll need the receipt."

Actually, EVERY monster costume except for the Metaluna mutant and Robby was CRAP!

Some worked better than others of course.
The aliens from Invasion of the Saucer-men looked great......Untill they moved! Than they looked like little Japaneese people looking through their necks!

I really think that others could not come close to those done by Paul Blaisdell. He always turned in the best the budget could allow and were at least effective.

It Conquered the World's Venusian was a Paul Blaisdell monster. Roger Corman tells how the Venusian, nicknamed Beulah, was originally only four feet tall. He had the height raised after he saw Beverly Garland walk up to Beulah. She said, "so you're taking over the world? Well take that", and she starts kicking the costume! He said that he learned a lesson that day, always make the monster taller than your leading lady! Laughing

Lately on Comet TV, I have seen three movies with the same cheap monster costume. It is a wet suit (they didn't even try to hide the zippers), a neck piece, mask and gloves. Very bad.

David.
