A useless question that's bugging me for some unknown reason. Was Walter Pidgeon's Van Dyke beard his, or the makeup department's?

Any opinions or facts on the subject?

The video below shows Walter Pidgeon in August of 1956, several months after Forbidden Planet was released. None of the photos of Pidgeon I found from that era show him wearing a Van Dyke beard, so I'm guessing it was created by the makeup department.

So, quick question that I forgot if I asked this before. Back on the old board, Butch shared some pix of what he claimed was a filmed but never released version of Forbidden Planet. I've always been dubious about those photos, and was wondering if those pix were still out there someplace.

Unfortunately we lost everything when the old board crashed. I don't remember the pictures, but since we learned not to trust the claims Butch made, I suspect his claim was bogus. Sad

Oh I don't think he was accurate about what it was. I wanted to see if I could figure out where those photos were actually from.

I used to be able to access Butch's Photobucket account, which would have the Forbidden Planet images he posted on the previous version of All Sci-Fi.

But after Photobucket stopped providing free services, Butch's account was blocked!

The only reason the images on Butch's ASF posts display on the current ASF is because several years ago I spent hours copying them all one-by-one and putting them in my own Imgur account, and then replace the PB urls on this posts with my own Imgur versions.

I knew Butch was not going to start paying Photobucket to keep his account active, so I rescued his images to keep All Sci-Fi from having posts with no images.

Maurice, I wish I could solve the mystery of the images Butch posted, but without knowing anything about them, I wouldn't know where to even start. Sad

Indeed there was a remake made. All the live scenes were shot, but they ran out of money to complete the special effects.

The impression I'm left with is disappointment in the overall concept. Whereas the original movie was innovative in design, the remake looks like every other cheap space adventure knock-off churned out up to the advent of CGI.

The heavy artillery looks like it would be very taxing on the gunner. The uniforms, blah. The vehicle concepts: WTF?. And Robby... What can I add to what's been said?

Color me skeptical. Photos from an auction aren't much to go on.

I forgot there was a separate topic for this subject, so I'll reply over there.

Regarding Maurice's signature quote, "The absence of limitations is the enemy of art.", in this case I think the budget limitation became the real enemy.

Secondary thought on the redesign of Robby: Was not Stan Winston mainly a makeup artist, specializing in creature effects?

Yes, I believe you're right. Stan Winston worked The Terminator, but he didn't design the robot, so I'm not sure he designed that new version of Robby.

Which, by the way I really dislike. Rolling Eyes

Perhaps the "Stan Winston Studios" text on the Robby redesign just meant that the producers wanted Stan's crew to handle the manipulation of the floating robot.

By the way, the internet is chock-full of images which show various versions of Robby for a proposed remake . . . and they all suck! Shocked

I'm not saying they're bad designs, I'm just saying they all look like they were designed for RoboCop or Terminator 22; Humanity is Wiped Out, End of Franchise.

I mean, damn . . . Robby is a butler, a gentleman's gentle, a nanny for Altaira, and a beloved member of the Morbius family!

Take a look at the video below and you'll see what the filmmakers in the 21st Century would do with a remake of Forbidden Planet, using concepts and designs like the ones shown here. Sad

And here's the video I took those images from.

__Forbidden Planet (1981) directed by Ridley Scott

___________

Consider the difference between today's society and the optimist pne of the late 1950s which produced the original Forbidden Planet — a world in which we all looked forward to a bright and happy future.

In today's pessimistic society, our young people spend hours playing first-person shooter video games so they can battle the denizens of a dark post-apocalyptic world! If the young folks in the 1950s had seen those games, both they and their parents would have been horrified! Shocked

Gentlemen, we've failed our children. And we've failed humanity. We've abandoned the destiny we could have enjoyed . . .

I don't think you can draw any conclusions from a single video made by one guy generating images by feeding prompts into MidJourney. Look how many hashtags are in the description:

Quote:

To your other point: have we actually failed our kids because of the games they play? The media they consume? Remember the outrage and fears over horror comics in the 50s? What about our own misspent youths running around playing shoot-em-ups with toy guns? What about Nerf guns, super soakers and paintball? Is a Playstation game worse just because it uses semi-realistic graphics?

And not all youth is into grimdark. Have you seen how much sugary kawaii is out there being consumed by young people? You'd need an insulin shot to get through a lot of it!

As to if "we've failed our children," people have been concerned about "kids these days" forever. Consider:

Quote:
The children now love luxury, they have bad manners, contempt for authority, they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize over their teachers.

-Socrates (470–399 BC)

I found the info below in the Wikipedia article about Forbidden Planet.

Cool, eh? Cool
______________________________________________

The film has a score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 50 reviews from critics,

Forbidden Planet had its world premiere at the
Southeastern Science Fiction Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, on March 3 and 4, 1956.

The film opened in more than 100 cities on March 23 in CinemaScope, and in some theaters, stereophonic sound, either by the magnetic or Perspecta processes.
