Why did these guys (and gal) become obsolete and be replaced with slashers and zombies? (Why are the movie and TV zombies called that? By definition they are ghouls.)

Ooops! I mean this guy:

I'm sure that question has been addressed by film historians over the decades.

Over familiarity(tedium) with the classic monsters due to the studios churning out feature after feature about them.
A changing culture that demanded more graphic violence & new, fresh monsters.
The human desire for change.

Even the new monster treatments change quickly. How long was it from the zombie revival until they had changed from slow and lumbering to hyperactive?

If I'm not mistaken, the original movie zombies were drugged or "voodooized" humans that did their master's bidding rather than trying to eat people.

Zombies were the least interesting monsters for me.

I'm a werewolf man or women fan first.

Have to say though that I'm a big Walking Dead fan though.

Well, I'd have to say I'm a woman fan first, and a werewolf fan second.

Wait . . . I think I misread your comment, Pow. Embarassed

I found a ranking of the "Top 10" movie/TV zombie types on YouTube, which provides a nice abridged summary of cinematic zombie portrayals.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VthdqAFRqgs

Arranged chronologically they would fall thusly:

1932 - White Zombie
Zombies slaves produced by magic Voodoo potion.

1968 - Night of the Living Dead
Classic George Romero zombies; slow, lumbering flesh eaters.

1985 - Return of the Living Dead
Brain-eating zombies able to speak, run, and function almost as humans; destroyed only by fire.

2002/2007 - 28 Days Later/28 Weeks Later
Rage zombies resulting from viral infection which can be transmitted by contact with their blood; brain puncture not necessary for decommissioning.

2004 - Dawn of the Dead
Fast zombies.

2005 - Land of the Dead
Intelligent zombies capable of organizing and plotting.

2009 - Dead Snow
Zombie Nazis, still functioning as a military group to protect stolen treasure.

2010+ - The Walking Dead
Slow but plentiful and relentless; they just wanna eat people; in a continuing process of deterioration or becoming trapped in inescapable situations; decommissioned only by puncturing the brain; the living are converted by either dying or by zombie bite. The term "zombie" is never used in the series.

2011+ - Game of Thrones
"White Walkers"/"Wights"; organized zombies able to transform the living by mere touch.

2013 - World War Z
Swarmers, fast and plentiful, climbing and falling over each other to get to the living.

Among the honorable mentions were dancing zombies (Michael Jackson's Thriller - 1983) and romantic zombies (Warm Bodies - 2013)

Romero said in interviews that his creations were not zombies, they are the living dead. In NOTLD not all of the dead were slow, but they were lumbering.

The last movie I've seen with a real zombie, was the HBO movie "Cast A Deadly Spell", although not a big part of the movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIlAGnpH5Aw

The rage-infestated of 28 Days/Weeks Later were supposedly not technically zombies either. But to sort out the "real zombies" from the pretenders to the title we need a definition of what really constitutes a zombie, and whether the definition can change over time. We run into the same problem with vampires, which take on various characteristics to suit the particular story.

Oh, I misunderstood! I thought "lumbering" meant they walked slowly! I didn't realize it meant they were "undead" lumberjacks!

Clearly, the lines of distinction are unclear.

That mole cartoon is very funny. Thanx for the laugh, Butch.

"Ghouls" are always alive. e.g., bodysnatchers, graverobbers, etc are ghouls. They're relatively ordinary people compared to zombies, who are dead, "living dead", or "undead". At least that's how I always understood the difference.

I prefer more contemporary zombies to those 30s and 40s types,. I would add these two movies to Orzel's list:

Robert Rodriguez' PLANET TERROR (2007) had some pretty good flesh-eaters.

I'm not a Woody Harrelson fan, but I thought ZOMBIELAND (2009) was good too. It was that movie that taught me to always "double tap".

By lumbering, I meant awkward and uncoordinated with inconsistent speed.

Also in NOTLD, the dead would use simple tools like a rock to break a window, so living dead lumberjacks with their axes would be very dangerous.
