Sidebar: Interesting. I believe all of the prior Anderson science fiction TV shows were written by only British writers. I wonder what brought about this change?

In the second half of its run, Space Precinct became increasingly confident, most notably in the scripting department. Rather than telling police stories in a sf setting they did more sf stories in a police setting.

Sidebar: I'd have to view the entire series to see if I could pick up on such a difference as the series progressed.

The more horrific elements were unsuitable for younger viewers. The series would swing from one extreme focusing on the loving Brogan family and humorous themes to violent action. This caused the show to be a hard sell to audiences as it tried to balance these threads.

The show was well received in the United Kingdom and Europe. It did poorly in the United States due to programmers placing the show on late night & early morning graveyard schedules.

Space Precinct took up 5 sound stages at Pinewood & Shepperton Studios and employed over 300 people.

The elaborate animatronic alien face masks were powered by small motors powered by a radio transmitter.

The heat inside these masks became intense for the actors after only being in them for 15 minutes.

It took the special effects crew 10 days to design, construct, and shoot the effects.

It normally required 3 shooting days to film the flying vehicles. It took 5 days to film a featured building.

One episode could require 25 finely detailed models.

Sidebar: I'm currently watching a two-part episode of Space Precinct. I'm finding that the special effects are a mixed bag of poor, fair, good, excellent. I still don't find the show's premise of blending science fiction with a law enforcement concept appealing. That could be because I've seen so many American police shows that I'm burned out by them. It seems to be the genre that the networks continue to pour out like a tsunami to the public. Even blending it with science fiction isn't terribly compelling to me.
