https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_Metal_(film)

Quote:
Heavy Metal is a 1981 Canadian-American adult animated science fantasy anthology film directed by Gerald Potterton, produced by Ivan Reitman and Leonard Mogel, who also was the publisher of Heavy Metal magazine, which was the basis for the film, and starring the voices of Rodger Bumpass, Jackie Burroughs, John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Don Francks, Martin Lavut, Marilyn Lightstone, Eugene Levy, Alice Playten, Harold Ramis, Percy Rodriguez, Susan Roman, Richard Romanus, August Schellenberg, John Vernon, and Zal Yanovsky. The screenplay was written by Daniel Goldberg and Len Blum.

The film is an anthology of various science fiction and fantasy stories adapted from Heavy Metal magazine and original stories in the same spirit. Like the magazine, the film features a great deal of graphic violence, sexuality, and nudity. Its production was expedited by having several animation houses working simultaneously on different segments. Despite the mixed reviews by film critics on its initial release, the film was a modest success at the box office and has since achieved cult status.

Enjoy the trailer and the Elmer Bernstein "hero theme" from the Den story. I've loved this music for decades. Very Happy

Being a life-long fan of Elmer Bernstein's music, I love the score for this film! The movie itself, however, doesn't thrill me quite as much. Sad

I wanted to like the movie, and bits of it are good, but ultimately it just doesn't hang together. The Grimaldi/Green Ball linking device doesn't really work, and, in the case of the Captain Stern segment, actually makes no sense with the punchline. Few of the sequences land, and while it's fine to pick up an issue of a comic and get only part or a serialized story, that's not effective in movie where the episodes either need to be self-contained little stories or fit together to make a bigger story.

They also made a big deal about the all the rock songs, but so many of them are so briefly excerpted that they might as well not be there. Fortunately, Bernstein's score (you can hear it here) is fantastic. The theme for "Taarna," played on the ondes Martenot with chorus was him adapting his rejected love theme from Saturn III.

Yeah, and I realize this was aimed at teens and young men, but it turned off a lot of women I know. I remember one friend rolling her eyes when Harry Canyon's taxi's disintegrator first vaporizes The Girl's clothes, leaving her naked before burning her out of existence, whereas it didn't do the same thing to a male earlier in the sequence. I think that emphasis on major boobage limited its box-office appeal in the long run.

And speaking of major boobage, the South Park episode "Major Boobage" totally sent up Heavy Metal. Definitely NSFW.

Maurice, youve written a wonderful review for this movie! Very Happy

Thanks for the fine analysis and interesting comments. You really summed up the flaws which lessened this film's impact on the audience. Mr. Green
