I would think that RH removed the armature from Gwangi, not just because it was an expensive mechanism, but also for the safety of his Daughter. It would make it lighter*, and also remove the chance of the armature breaking through the skin and injuring his Daughter.

I don't believe it's possible to remove the armature from a stop-motion puppet while keeping the model intact. A stop-motion model has layers of latex "muscles" laid over the metal armature and covered by whatever material is used for "skin" (or fur for apes and other mammals). In order to re-use an armature, the model has to be stripped down and destroyed.

Scotpens in correct, of course, about the sad fate of several Harryhausen animation models. Here's what Pow wrote on the previous page of this thread.

Pow wrote:
To save money on the budget, Ray would recycle the armatures from his other films and reuse 'em on succeeding films.

Gwangi's armature was originally used for the Ceratosaurus from "One Million B.C.; the Ornithomimus armature was from the Phororhacos from "Mysterious Island,"; and the Styracosaurus from "One Million B.C." found its armature inside the Triceratops.

David, you asked a very interesting question.

Krel wrote:
I wounder how much a stop-motion armature for a Kong or Gwangi would weigh?

I suspect the armature weighs about as much as double-handful of large nuts and bolts —

— and the exterior is just padding and a rubber "skin" that has to be thin so is won't inhibit the movement of the armature during the animation.

So, in addition to being a "very expensive doll", Ray's daughter also had a fairly weighty little darlin'. Very Happy

According to producer Charles H. Schneer, director Jim O'Connolly lost all interest in the film during the middle of production.

Sidebar: If you accept a directing assignment & salary you are obligated to perform at your best. You should honor your contract, or do not accept the offer to direct. You should respect your producers, crew, and cast.

DYK? Composer Jerome Moross reuses his score from the showdown in Blanco Canyon from the western film The Big Country for the opening title credits of Valley of Gwangi.

Sidebar: Wonder how JM pulled that one off? I'd think there could be copyright and legal issues involved here?

By gum, I've always thought that music sounded familiar!

I saw The Big Country years ago, and a friend mine made a cassette tape for me that featured the scores from Western movies. It probably includes that score.
