Who can get by on the sleep we get in a 24-hour day? Nobody. Sleep is a constant struggle all our lives, and it's one of the great perks of retirement. That's when we finally have enough time to sleep. Then it doesn't matter if there isn't enough waking time to get everything done, because there's so much less that needs to BE done.

What one human activity here on Earth eclipses all other efforts? What is one of the first things we HAVE TO HAVE in order to survive? Shelter. The grass hut, the lean-to, the teepee, the cave and every single building on this Earth: what are they for? To protect us FROM this Earth. Even our clothing (especially our shoes) is for one main thing: to protect us from this Earth.

The human race evolved on a planet with a 25- or 26-hour daily cycle. We evolved on a planet where our skin was all the protection we needed. Then we got dropped off here on Earth and we've been fighting for survival ever since.

You have to realize that Homo Sapiens are basicly a TROPICAL ANIMAL. As we were originaly formed as dark skinned upright standing bi-ocular dwellers of warm/hot grass lands in a tropical environment.

As we moved around we found that our brains were capable of inventing methods to adapt to changing environments. Our bodies modified through natural selection to adapt as well. Skin colors, body size and fat reserves changed to fit environments from the hot African steppes to the frozen arctic tundras.

We are indeed a "plastic" animal.

Trying to imagine what this possibly has to do with this forum.

In actuality we DID evolve on a planet with much shorter day / night rates.

Due to THE MOON!

The moon is responsible for things on Earth, like our tides and possibly even our weird dreams during a full moon, and now a new study claims that the moon is actually slowing down Earth’s days.

Scientists believe that the days on Earth 1.4 billion years ago were about 18 hours and that over time the moon actually slowed down Earth’s rotation enough that our days are now 24 hours.

This study was published in the journal Proceeding of the National Academy of Science (which can be found here). Researchers have developed this theory by using an interesting approach called “astrochronology”.

We do know that the moon drifts away from our Earth at a rate of 1.5 inches a year, which does create a pull that has slowed the planet down. Researchers were able to use that information to trace back distances to know that 1.4 billion years ago the moon was considerably closer to the Earth.

That closeness made the Earth spin faster, and one full rotation took about 18 hours. Over time the gravitation forces from the moon have acted against the gravitational forces of the Earth, which is what is causing the moon to pull away from the Earth.

One of the researchers gave an example to help explain the theory. 1.4 billion years ago the moon was closer, making the Earth spin like a ballerina with its arms pulled close to their body.

Over time, as the moon pulled away the Earth started slowing down, like a ballerina extending their arms to slow their rotation.
