The first time I saw this movie (and the first sequel, too, actually), I didn't care much for it. Movies about societies which seem to be populated by cruel and selfish people don't often appeal to me.
I can't help wondering why they don't wise up and behave themselves.
The whole idea that the wealthy class bullied the lower class with all their cruel restrictions and selfish exploitation was offensive. The fact that these grinning aristocrats gleefully watched all the suffering on television made it that much more unpleasant.
But of course it was all a careful setup for the Big Revolution that was coming, and that served to balance the scales of justice — or at least offer the promise that they would eventually be balanced.
Naturally it was nice to watch Jennifer Lawrence look lovely while she was kicking ass and making Donald Sutherland increasingly nervous by getting closer and closer to the day when his own ass would be the kickee.
All in all, the movie and its sequels is enjoyable.
