Right! And after gobbling up all the fat, slow penguins, the polar bears got fat and slow — so the hungry Eskimos who were too lazy to go whale hunting starting gobbing up the obese bears and . . .

. . . it was horrible, an ecological fiasco. The world would have been outraged by the incident if Sarah Palin hadn't covered up the whole thing!

It was definitely one of her more successful cover ups.

I once saw a program on polar bear migrations in Canada. One year a man opened a pig farm, not knowing that it was one the polar bear migration route. The locals said that the polar bears showed up at that location for years afterward looking for more pork dinners.

In case anyone is not aware, that Sarah Palin photo is a photoshopped version of a well-known Anne Hathaway image.

At one time the concept paintings showed Robby traveling through a gorge. Here's a real neat one in Oregon; the Oneonta (one ON tah) Gorge on the Columbia River.

We visited it last Summer.

Polar bears — the other white meat — that bites back!

Last night I saw an advert on TCM about Friday Night Spotlight for April 2015. This month's subject is the work of The Wizard of M-G-M A. Arnold "Buddy" Gillespie.

Here is the US schedule for Friday April 3, 2015:

Here is the US schedule for Friday April 10, 2015:

Here is the US schedule for Friday April 17, 2015:

Here is the US schedule for Friday April 24, 2015:

All times shown are for the Pacific time zone. Adjust for your time zone.

NOTE: The TCM Canadian schedule is sometimes considerably different from the US Schedule. Check your local guide.

The host is Robert Osbourne and his guests are Craig Barron and Ben Burtt (both SFX specialists). The advert showed several behind-the-scenes of Forbidden Planet, but that's not going to be shown. Here's what the TCM site shows for the next broadcast:

That alternative running time of 106 minutes is interesting. Where did they get the extra 8 minutes? The work print is 16mm, soft focus (i. e. blurry), washed-out color with red edging, lots of film emulsion scratches and is unfinished. So they couldn't use that.

When Forbidden Planet is shown on June 18, 2015 I'm going to record it just in case it IS that 106 minute print!

ADDENDUM On A. Arnold "Buddy" Gillespie:

The book:

Miniatures for The Medusa Touch (1978):

Miniature ships in Ben Hur (1959):

And the miniature set of the harbor in ATLANTIS The Lost Continent (1961):

* * * * * * * * * *

This boat looks like it could be piloted by Robby!

Yes! Really the same style.

Fortunately, there is only one difference in the Canadian and US TCM schedules above. We don't get GREEN DOLPHIN STREET on the 17th. Everything else is the same.

The schedules are usually the same unless there is a rights issue. For years, when TCM showed Laurel and Hardy films, we couldn't see them on TCM here. That seems to have been resolved. But, every once in awhile, there are films that have different rights holders in Canada and that messes things up.

A new advert for Friday Night Spotlight says that 60 films will be shown on which Buddy worked on. They can't; not on Friday evenings alone. (And Forbidden Planet was on the list!)

* * * * * * * * * *

In any remake of the movie they would need to show a more realistic night shot on Altair IV. Since they are near the pole (logically the C-57-D would enter the atmosphere around the magnetic pole) there should be Aurora.

The star Altair is more active than Sol; to be able to live on the planet Altair IV, the planet would have a stronger magnetic field than Terra; ergo Aurora would be more common (EVERY night) and far more complex This type of Aurora is rare here on Earth and only happens when there is a greater than normal CME and the Earth's (slightly) varying magnetic field is near or at maximum. It is called a "braided Aurora" and should be common on Altair IV — but with varying colors and far more movement.

Robert Welch, a grandson of Gillespie and co-editor of this book, appeared at ConDor Con XXII in San Diego on March 13-15. He had a vendor's table, selling the books (I picked up a copy Very Happy ), and also presented two sessions on the sfx for two of Gillespie's assignments at MGM, The Wizard of Oz and Forbidden Planet.

Imagine the braided Aurora (see above) in the rainbow colors such as this.

Can you imagine Alta having a tree-house tree looking something like this.
