Disney is finally got it into their corporate-suited heads that a prequel to 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (1954) might be a good thing.

What the potential director of this project, James Mangold, said about his battle with the corporate executives whose sworn duty is to screw these things up sounded pretty encouraging.

I don't mean encouraging concerning the prospect of getting the movie made, just encouraging concerning the integrity of the director.

So, this might be good. Or not . . . (as Wayne says. Very Happy )

True, Bud, true.

Now apply that "logic" to all of the movies that 'failed' at the box-office and you can get a tiny idea of why very few sci-fi movies are even in the same league (pun intended) as the classics from years gone by.

This makes two films based on 20,000 Leagues currently in the works. What do you want to bet only one (or less) makes it to your neighborhood screen?

Will it be a case of too many too-thousand leagues? Or an embarrassment of riches?

In 1997 there were three 20k productions released to TV, at least two of which (ABC and CBS networks) were motivated by a prior announcement by Disney that they would be remaking 20k at that time. That experience probably rules out "an embarrassment of riches", although the Nautilus designs are popular among some fans.

Disney has cancelled this project after filming it, and it is apparently looking for a new home for airing.
