Wow, you mean the title on the marquee was the only thing that doesn't quite look right?

No, but I was poking fun because it's REALLY obvious, since how often do movie marquees ever use lowercase letters? Wink

I sense what you really really want is this font, Bud. Wink

My goodness, Maurice, those fonts are far to fancy for the poor little East Point Theater!

I realize that big theaters like the one at Lenox Square in Atlanta (where I grew up) had raised letters similar to the font shown at the site you provided. But if I had used a font like that one from Paint.net (the app I used to modify the old photo), the letters would not have looked like real plastic letters on a marquee.

Besides, that would have been the wrong kind of letters for the little East Point Theater anyway. This was a small 600 seat theater in a Mayberry-sized Georgia town. It probably used a fairly small (and simple) version of the marquee letters, because the marquee itself was small. Very Happy

However, as you can see from the jpegs below, even large theaters (like the RKO Hill Street Theater in Los Angeles and the Paramount Theater in Atlanta) just used letters that appear to be flat — which is exactly what I used.

Maybe something more like this, then?

Hey, by gum that DOES look better! I'll make the change in the original and replace it in the post above and in the Beyond the Time Barrier thread.

Nice going, Wayne! Very Happy

Kinda related, my now 91 year old neighborhood theater uses both opaque black and transparent red lettering on its marquee, but not that fancy dimensional kind like the font I half-jokingly shared.

Some years back the theater got a grant to restore its blade sign and marquee, and my neighbor Paul got the contract to do the work (except for the neon). I helped out in a small way by finding old photos of the theater to figure out how blade sign was originally painted and how all the neon had been originally (sadly they didn't have the budget to replace all the bits that had been removed in the past). One day Paul waved me up on the scaffolding so I could see that we was chipping away the decades of paint trying to find the original color, which turned out to be a deep reddish color and not the salmony orange it had been for ages. It's like theater archaeology!

Good Lord, Maurice, I'm glad you didn't post pictures of the gorgeous Balboa Theater before we discussed the poor old East Point Theater and my efforts to restore it to a better condition using a photo of it long after it had closed down. Sad

This old photo of the Balboa Theater from 1968 makes it look like a small step up from the East Point Theater —

— but these more recent color photos of the Balboa clearly show that even though it was a small theater (800 seats, just 1/3 larger than the East Point Theater's 600 seats), it's spectacular appearance is equal to many much larger "movie palaces"!

_________

But I hated the fact that the jungle of telephone wires were so distracting. They marred the two magnificent shots of the Balboa I found, like the one above and the second one below. So I went to work removing the wires from both photos, and here's the results. Very Happy

_________

_________

And even the interior of the Balboa Theater puts the old East Point Theater to shame. I don't have a picture of the interior, but it was very plain and unimpressive — as opposed to the beauty of the Balboa. Cool

Maurice, I'm so pleased that you and Paul are working to restore the Balboa to its glory days. If you could provided us with photos of the restoration work, we'd love to see them.

Perhaps I'll start a thread on this subject in Off Topic Discussions and invite other members to share their memories of theaters like the East Point, the LaRose (which Rick has told us about), and the Balboa. Very Happy

Just how did the makers of this movie (and others like it) get those alligators and crocodiles to fight so viciously.

Well, apparently it's easy . . . especially during mating season! Wink

Jill St.John was a very popular girl. While making the movie she had these pictures taken:

I'd definitely fight over this during "mating season"!!!

TLW Trivia } Irwin Allen's 1959 hit The Big Circus made it possible for him to get TLW produced.

Allen tried very hard to secure Gilbert Roland for the role that Fernando Lamas would ultimately play in the film.

Allen wanted James Mason for the part of professor Challenger.

Allen felt that it was disrespectful for any of the crew to address the cast by their first names.
Claude Rains was fine being called by his first name. Calling him 'Mr.Rains' made him feel like an old man according to Claude.

The ASPCA made a formal complaint against 20th Century Fox regarding the fight between the lizards.

David Hedison felt that the movie was terrible. It was why he turned down numerous times the offer from Irwin to be cast in the Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea movie, and later the television series.

I don't think Mason would have been right as Challenger. Raines had the right gruffness for the role — and wore the beard very well, too. Very Happy
