_____

Also released as: Invasion of the Body Stealers, Thin Air]

Several parachutists disappear when they pass through a red mist. The mystery is solved by George Sanders (in a very brief role) when he learns that an alien (Maurice Evans of Planet of the Apes) is substituting duplicates and storing the originals in suspended animation.

This one is something of a disappointment. It DOES have an alien spaceship, but we don't see much of it, and it isn't revealed until close to the end.

I tend to think of Maurice Evans in his "Bewitched" role as Samantha's father, coincidentally also called Maurice.

According to Wikipedia:

Evans appeared in more American television productions of Shakespeare than any other actor. Beginning in 1953, for the famous television anthology, Hallmark Hall of Fame, he starred in the first feature-length (i.e., longer than an hour) dramatisations of the plays to ever be presented on American television. They were:

Hamlet
Macbeth (twice — both times appearing with Judith Anderson, who won an Emmy for both of her television performances as Lady Macbeth. Evans won an Emmy Award for the latter, 1960 production. The earlier, a live telecast, was in 1954)
Richard II
Twelfth Night (as Malvolio)
The Taming of the Shrew (as Petruchio, opposite Lilli Palmer as Katherine)
The Tempest (as Prospero). This last featured an all-star cast that included Lee Remick as Miranda, Roddy McDowall as Ariel, and Richard Burton as Caliban.

In bringing so much Shakespeare to American television in such a short span of time (between 1953 and 1960), he was a true pioneer. This had never been tried before — at least, not in the U.S. Evans firmly believed that it was an actor's job to "lead public taste, not to play to public taste". Evans also brought his Shakespeare productions to Broadway many times, playing Hamlet on the Great White Way in four separate productions for a record grand total of 283 performances.

The spaceship is recycled from Daleks — Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D. (1966), the second of the two Dr. Who feature films starring Peter Cushing.

Apart from the Dalek spaceship the only other bit I liked in this film was seeing Sally Faulkner in her underwear! Very Happy

______________ The Body Stealers 1969 Trailer

___________

Military paratroopers on training exercises are disappearing in mid-air!

George Sanders & Maurice Evans are top-billed as General and Doctor, but the central role is played by Patrick Allen as a special investigator named Bob Megan, called in to solve the mystery.

Neil Connery (Sean's brother) co-stars as the other man on the case and the one who called in Megan. Megan, who is the ultimate ladies man, meets a blonde woman on the beach and, though he is clueless, the audience knows right away that something is up with her.

Eventually, Megan decides to try the parachute jump himself, but he just ends up hospitalized for his troubles. The culprits are aliens who have a problem with a plague on their planet, and I think the kidnapped personnel were meant to help stop this plague. It's all quite routine — from Tigon Pictures — as well as predictable and anticlimactic.

However, it's watchable.

Trivia Stealers: Shelagh Fraser plays an amorous inn proprietor here. She later played Luke Skywalker's aunt in Star Wars (77). The alien spaceship at the end is from Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 AD (1966)
