FROM THE BBC ;

Jodie Whittaker has been announced as the Thirteenth Doctor.

The identity of the new Doctor was revealed exclusively on BBC One and on social media around the world after the Men's Wimbledon Final on Sunday 16th July.

She will be the Thirteenth Time Lord and take over from Peter Capaldi who leaves the global hit show at Christmas.

New head writer and executive producer Chris Chibnall who takes over from Steven Moffat on the next series made the decision to cast the first ever woman in the iconic role.

Jodie Whittaker says: "I'm beyond excited to begin this epic journey - with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It's more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can't wait."

Chris Chibnall, New Head Writer and Executive Producer says :

"After months of lists, conversations, auditions, recalls, and a lot of secret-keeping, we're excited to welcome Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor.
I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role. The Thirteenth Doctor is on her way."

Peter Capaldi says : "Anyone who has seen Jodie Whittaker's work will know that she is a wonderful actress of great individuality and charm. She has above all the huge heart to play this most special part. She's going to be a fantastic Doctor."

Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content says :
"Making history is what Doctor Who is all about and Chris Chibnall's bold new take on the next Time Lord is exactly that. The nation is going to fall in love with Jodie Whittaker - and have lots of fun too!"

Piers Wenger, Controller BBC Drama says : "Jodie is not just a talented actor but she has a bold and brilliant vision for her Doctor. She aced it in her audition both technically and with the powerful female life force she brings to the role. She is destined to be an utterly iconic Doctor."

Matt Strevens, Executive Producer says : "I'm so thrilled that Jodie Whittaker said yes to playing the Doctor. I've been a fan for years and always hoped to work with her. She is an actor of great emotional range and inhabits every role with complete passion and conviction. Just thinking about what she will bring to the Doctor makes me as excited as a kid at Christmas. It's going to be a lot of fun."

We have certainly come a long way since the First Doctor. Jodie Whittaker is a new name to me, as I didn't follow Broadchurch... with a new star and a new showrunner, 2018 is going to be an important year for the show.

Never followed Dr.Who but a friend of mine did at one time.He brought up a few days ago that they were going to announce the 13th--& latest--doctor for the role.

I remember thinking that after 12 male actors essaying the part that it was time for a female Dr.Who.
And they did just that, still won't be watching the series though.

I am so excited for this new season. Jodie Whitaker is a fantastic actress, so I feel like the role is in good hands. The new show runner is great too, so I think we can look forward to some great new developments in the Doctor’s story.

Not to my liking I'm afraid as I'm a stick in the mud long time Who fan! Loved Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee and Tom Baker and enjoyed some of the next three Doctors intermittently! The 2005 stuff I've blown hot and cold about over the last few years with Dalek and Utopia being two stories that I did really enjoy! But the Moffat era has been a big disappointment for me and now that they've brought in gender swapping (where there wasn't any in 63-89) I'm done with it! Hey, Jodie is a nice looking woman I'll agree, but I hated the Capaldi reign and this is just ticking the boxes in a gender agenda cause for me!

I have to agree about being a Doctor purist, although I enjoyed the David Tennant run very much.

I'll just have to wait and see what the new series will be like. Remember....This too shall pass.

My daughter, All Sci-Fi member Ticket2theMoon, made me a Doctor Who fan when we shared the first season of the revival, when Christopher Eccleston was the star. I loved this portrayal, but I was very disappointed when David Tennant took over!

But I soon grew to love David, and adored all the episodes in which he starred. But I was very disappointed when Matt Smith took over!

But I soon grew to love him too, and I adored all the episodes in which HE starred as well.

However, I haven't made an effort to watch the episodes since Matt Smith left, so I can't render an opinion on the version of The Doctor after him. But I figure I'm saving something for my old age by doing this. Very Happy

As for the female Doctor . . . maybe I'm to old and too old fashioned to be that liberal.

The Peter Capaldi era was absolutely dreadful! Matt Smith had the promise to be excellent in the role with his eccentric hand throwing when he was first revealed to the public in 2009 but his performances were let down by very bad writing! Capaldi's time has been even worse! The factor in both of these regenerations is Stephen Moffat! I'm not sure who granted him a license to be a writer but they need to ask him for it back and quickly!

I guess this is an example of how a person's expectations and make or break something like a show or movie.

I'd never watched a Doctor Who episode in my life, so the Christopher Eccleston season was viewed by me with no expectations whatsoever, and thus I was able to enjoy it for what it was.

Plus the fact that it was introduced tom me by my daughter, (All Sci-Fi member Ticket2theMoon), with whom I shared the episodes during a week-long visit to Altanta, and she is a brilliant young lady who possesses boundless enthusiasm for the things she enjoys.

Her devotion is contagious, so I've frequently caught the fan bug from her when she introduced me to shows like Smallville and Sherlock, the latter of which is another Moffat project that started out fantastic and slowly curdled like month-old milk. Shocked

I haven't spoken to her yet about the new Doctor Whoveena, Temporal Medicine Woman, but I suspect that being a true fan (as well as a female-type hersel) she's giving it every opportunity to succeed, just out of fan loyalty.
Very Happy

Bud, I have to admit that I thought that Eccleston was miscast in the role! He wasn't eccentric enough to be Doctor Who and he just didn't fit the part as such! Shame he fell fowl of the directors and producers though and he has stated that Doctor Who nearly finished off his career!

This is another example of how influential a viewer's expectations are. Very Happy

Being totally unfamiliar with the character when I first starting watching the series with my daughter, I was delighted by Eccleston's acting and his boundless energy. David Tennant and Matt Smith both had the youth and energy I expected from the character, but when Smith was replaced by a much older man, I was disappointed.

And yet the character was frequently played by older actors in the original series. So my initial exposure to the character was not actually a version consistent with the traditional way he was played.

She's a lovely looking woman I'll agree and she could have been great as the new Doctor's assistant but as the Doctor...no way!
