I was impressed with this movie for a variety of reasons the first time I saw it .

The cast is impressive. Ken Marshall is cool and handsome as the prince who suddenly becomes a king when his wedding is interrupted by an invasion force which slaughters his family and kidnaps his bride.

Lysette Anthony is drop-dead gorgeous and makes one hell of a princess-bride who's held hostage by a giant satanic conqueror who flies around the galaxy in a mammoth mountain-fortress which lands on the planets he wants to take possession of.

Freddie Jones is an elderly "Merlin" figure who guides the young prince in his quest to rescue his hot bride and save his world from the evil super-villain.

The score by James Horner is wonderful, a huge plus for this spirited action-adventure yarn which includes a remarkable group of loyal allies, including a band of roguish escaped criminals, a wacky young wizard who often gets his spells mixed up, and a seven-foot cyclops with a heart of gold.

The special effects include a giant stop-motion spider which seems to be made of glass, animated by Steve Archer. The weapons used by the storm trooper-like soldiers of the satanic villain fire bolts of energy, like Star Wars blasters.

All these imaginative elements which blend science fiction and fantasy are a prefect example of what Arthur C. Clark once said.

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

The Blu-ray of this enjoyable movie is available from Amazon for $6.59. Heck, a meal from McDonald's cost more than that!

So . . . I just ordered it. I'll have a can of Ravioli for dinner. Very Happy

Enjoy the trailer for this fine movie.

I remember reading that the Glave (correct name?) weapon gave them problems. They were trying to figure out how to make a mechanism small enough to fit into the prop, that would extend the blades at the same time. After many attempts, they finally settled on a low-tech solution. They used rubber bands.

I see my dvd is still in its cellophane wrapper, from back in the days when dvds cost more than blu-rays do now... though I see "Buy 1 get 1 free" is on the label. "Excalibur meets Star Wars. Lavishly mounted" is the verdict from Variety featured on the back cover.

Four galleries, two commentaries, filmographies, trailer, "Journey to Krull" featurette, and "Comic Book - Video images of the Marvel Comic with dialogue and sound effects from the film." A lot of extras for a dvd, I wonder if the Blu-ray has kept them all?

Here's a sample of the Marvel Super Special art, by Bret Blevins:

Sadly those special features are not on the Blu-ray, and they sound wonderful. Sad

I notice, checking the Amazon US site, that some reviewers are commenting on that.

"This Blu-Ray edition simply offers the movie in better clarity than DVD. That is the only advantage of this over the DVD Special Edition release, which was loaded with behind-the-scenes bits."

Strange — with the extra carrying capacity of a Blu-ray disc, you'd expect more, and that a good line-up of extras would be a selling point. Still, at $6.58, against $9.98 for the dvd, the manufacturers would be keen to keep their operation as simple as possible.

One peeve I often have with Amazon reviews of a movie is that they lump all versions together, so that a perfectly sharp dvd release will show the reviews of a poor quality version that another label perpetrated (with older out-of-copyright musicals, say)... or you won't know what version of Avatar is actually on sale on that page.

Unfortunately, Custer, the $9.98 DVD is not the "Special Edition" you have, and under Special Features it just says, "none".

The "Special Edition" with all the good stuff is $21.85 on Amazon.
Sad

Not a huge price, $21.85, but it would seem to have kept its value better than most dvd releases. I must say that my UK copy doesn't have "SPECIAL EDITION" across the top, above that same picture... it just says "WIDESCREEN," but there's a little blue circle with "Amazing Extra Features, including a 38 minute Marvel Comic Book" - not that I'm sure many people, shortly after watching the whole actual movie, would settle back down for some kind of dubbed comic version of the same story. Very Happy

________________________________

IMDB has 51 trivia items for this movie. Here’s a few of the ones I found the most interesting, in the blue text. Very Happy
________________________________

~ A short behind-the-scenes promotional documentary about the making-of the film was made for television. Entitled Journey to Krull (1983) it is now available on the DVD for the movie.

Note from me: And by gum, here it is!
Very Happy

_______ Journey to Krull - The Making of the Film

__________

~ Sixteen Clydesdale horses trained for months in order to play the "Fire Mares".

Note from me: Trained? For months? To gallop, for God's sake!? Shocked

~ To prepare for his role as Prince Colwyn, Ken Marshall worked out constantly prior to principal photography, training in such sports as riding, fencing, and boxing.

Note from me: I've always been impress with Mr. Marshall. He made a fine hero. Very Happy

~ Frank Price, then-president of Columbia Pictures, determined that an unknown American actress would help stateside ticket sales better than an unknown English actress. Price met with Lysette Anthony and told her that all of her dialogue had been dubbed by Lindsay Crouse.

Note from me: Miss Anthony is drop-dead gorgeous!

~ For five months, a cast and crew of several hundred created the planet of Krull, inhabiting ten sound stages and 23 different sets.

Note from me: Wow, that makes it sound sort of like the Forbidden Planet production!

~ Within weeks of the start of principal photography, the wardrobe department evolved into a showcase of over a hundred different costumes, ranging from iridescent wedding gowns to tattered suede and leather riding apparel. Daggers, swords, cross-bows, crates of emerald-colored stones, crystal hour-glasses and countless other items, many of which defied classification, filled every shelf and corner of the prop rooms.

Note from me: This doesn't surprise me. The film has a wonderfully lush and imaginative look. This next item describes more reasons to admire the look of this production.

~ For nearly four weeks, the cast and crew moved to Pinewood Studio's biggest stage used for the James Bond adventures, the "OO7 Stage", which measured 336' x 139' x 40'. Transformed into an eerie and clammy swampland, dotted with jagged trees and foaming eight-foot-deep pools, this ominous landscape of browns and yellows took over five months of construction.

The special effects department created a superbly realistic quicksand mire in which some twenty unlucky technicians at one time or another found themselves.

Director Peter Yates had to balance himself on a raft which floated on one of the many pools to survey the massive set. Particularly difficult shots demanded the camera operator don a wet-suit and immerse himself in either "quicksand" or one of the larger pools.

Note from me: I'm grateful to the IMDB member who posted this item. He certainly did his homework!

________________________________

The DVD shown above is now priced at $18.59, but Amazon only list three items under Special Features!

Cast and crew commentary
Behind-the-scenes commentary
Previews

However, the gentleman on the video below reviews this same DVD, praising both it and the movie very highly. And at about the 13 minute mark he reads the long list of special features right off the back cover of his copy. Obviously it's the great DVD you have, with more special features than you shake a light saber at!

I've got the low-priced Blu-ray (with zero special features) when I want to watch the movie, and I think I'll buy the DVD just to have all that bonus material. Very Happy

What the heck . . . you can't take it with you, right? Cool

It is indeed a fun movie, Bud, but wouldn't it be classified as fantasy and not sci~fi?

A fair point, sir. Very Happy

But plot elements such as the way the Black Mountain the satan-like creature lives in comes to the planet Krull by traveling through space in the opening scene — along with the way the weapons his soldiers use shoot blaster-like bolts — would suggest that this might be a case of the old saying, "Any technology which is sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic".

Admittedly there's plenty of elements which certainly seem like pure magic, like those Clydesdale horses that fly and emit fire from their hooves, and the funny little sorcerer who recites working magic spells from his notes.

Therefore, the movie is obviously a blend of sci-fi and fantasy, so we'd be inaccurate if we classified it as all fantasy and no sci-fi.

And finally, lets bare in mind that according to the website at this link, In 2015, George Lucas himself declared that "Star Wars isn't a science-fiction film, it's a fantasy film and a space opera".

Star Wars, of course, has numerous sci-fi elements and just a few subtle fantasy elements woven into the plot. With Krull it's the other way around.

So, I guess we might have to fudge a bit on our "mission statement" which says that ASF is Nothin' but pure science fiction.

And I feel obliged to confess that when I first came up with that tag line back in 2006 (when the first ASF was created), I was actually saying, "Lots of science fiction . . . and no straight Horror!"

My apologies, of course, to the loyal members of the Classic Horror Film Board. We all have our personal preferences, I reckon. Cool

I remember seeing this in the theaters and emerging with an opinion that would a few decades hence be described as "meh." There were some imaginative moments, but overall I found Krull dull.

Ah well, we all know that if a person sees a movie at the wrong time in his life it will have a different effect on his emotions than if he'd seen it earlier or later.

I could name several movies that I enjoyed initially, but later didn't have the same high regard for it. Ditto for movies I didn't care for the first time . . . and then watched years later and was very impressed! Shocked

It just goes to show that likes and dislikes can often be highly subjective.
