But seriously, in what way is the song "gay"?

It's like the Mazda Miata of music. It just has an undefinable gayness about it Smile.

For purposes of establishing musical guidelines I present these different ends of the spectrum:

What happens when you mix the movie THEM! (1954) with this thread?

I was shocked and saddened to read that Lynn Anderson has died.

Lynn Anderson was one of those singers who's fame was actually earned by her perfect voice. There were and are plenty of country music superstars from Loretta Lynn to Taylor Swift who rose to prominence as writers and personalities even though neither are powerhouse singers.

Lynn Anderson just had a flawless voice.

Was the 1910 Fruitgum Co. even a real band? A lot of that bubblegum stuff was recorded by anonymous session musicians and singers, and the record label would just find some attractive-looking people to put on the album cover. Same thing happened a lot with disco in the '70s (that's how Milli Vanilli got started).

Serendipitously I discovered this old tune by Johnny ("Mr. Bass Man") Cymbal on YouTube:

It's an obvious copycat of the Dion and the Belmonts sound.

Recently I watched a documentary called The Wrecking Crew (2015) on a Netflix DVD rental (not to be confused with the 1969 Dean Martin movie of the same name). The description on the website is as follows...

Quote:
Prolific session musicians the Wrecking Crew, who provided backup instrumentals for numerous popular bands in the 1960s, are profiled by filmmaker Denny Tedesco, whose father, Tommy, was a member of the band, in this absorbing documentary. Cher, Brian Wilson, Mickey Dolenz, Dick Clark and others reflect on the amazing musicians who backed up the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, the Mamas and the Papas, the Monkees and many more.

I highly recommend it as an essential unit of your musical education.

(A) I love Johnny Cymbal (especially his "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" song), and (B) even though it does sound a lot like "Runaround Sue", Johnny's "Little Miss Lonely" is very enjoyable, especially with that prefect way he sings it.

Thanks for making me aware of it, Wayne.

This was here and gone before I heard about it.

Bobby Vee finally succumbed to Alzheimer's on 24 Oct 2016, at age 73. A couple items I picked up from articles and the Bobby Vee website...

His career launched on 3 Feb 1959 when, at age 15, he and his band filled in on the Buddy Holly tour after Holly, Ritchie Valens, and "The Big Bopper", J.P. Richardson, died in a plane crash on their way to the next stop of the tour.

Oddly enough, earlier posts at the website had announced the deaths of Billy Joe Royal a year prior to Bobby's, also at age 73, also in October, and Paul Revere (of the Raiders) a year prior to that, also in October, at age 76.

I loved this album in the 1970s, and a few years ago I bought the CD. It's a bushel of great music, both then and now. Enjoy it.

I know this thread is two years old, but I'm giving it a bump because anyone who appreciates great drumming has got to check out this fantastically talented German girl. I just stumbled across her on YouTube.
