'Star Trek: Captain Pike' Fan Film to Boldly Go to Pre-Kirk Enterprise
by Elizabeth Howell, Space.com Contributor

A group of dedicated "Star Trek" fans want to make a new movie, featuring a character from "The "Original Series" who was captain of the Enterprise before James T. Kirk. And they plan to have experienced "Star Trek" actors taking part.

Christopher Pike was featured in the first pilot episode of the original "Star Trek" TV show. That episode, called "The Cage," concerns a mission in the year 2254, when Captain Pike and his crew are leaving the planet Rigel VII, where several team members were killed.

"The incident filled Pike with so much guilt that he is considering resigning his commission. But that's all we know about Captain Pike, and we want to know so much more. Don't you?" the group's Kickstarter page reads.

"This is the story of Captain Pike when he first takes command of the Enterprise and his first mission aboard her," it adds. "And with your help, it will lead into a 90-minute Captain Pike film or Web Series."

The group — which calls itself Rigel 7 Productions — aims to first make a 45-minute feature called "Star Trek: Captain Pike," then produce the 90-minute movie "Star Trek: Encounter at Rigel."

So far Rigel 7 Productions' Kickstarter campaign has raised almost $24,000 of its $112,000 goal. The campaign will close on June 3.

Rigel 7 Productions says "Encounter at Rigel" wouldanswer three questions raised by "The Cage" pilot episode: What happened to Pike's first officer and science officer (Mr. Spock) on the first mission; if Pike ever went into battle; and what alien race he encountered.

Pike will be played by Todd Shawn Tei, the producer of the show. The cast also includes Robert Picardo, who played The Doctor on "Star Trek: Voyager."

Other headliners include Bruce Davison ("Star Trek: Voyager and Enterprise"), Dwight Schultz ("Star Trek: TNG"), Linda Park ("Star Trek: Enterprise") and Chase Masterson ("Star Trek: Deep Space 9").....

Am I misremebering, or weren't those aliens represented by the tall dude decked out in fur, pulled up out of Pike's memories, who was dragging Vina (Susan Oliver) into the castle?

You are correct. If would be more correct if they had said something like we will see the incident that killed several of Pike's crew.

Here is an interesting bridge shot.

________________________________

I realize the idea I'm about to suggest is terribly naive and unrealistic, but it's such and appealing concept I can't resist tossing it out here for your amusement, folks.

Here goes nothin'. Very Happy

The entire Star Trek franchise has been mishandled for decades, with good movies and TV series coming out amidst several less-than-good movies. And no one has been able to take charge of things so the studio could make quality productions that presented stories which didn't make glaring errors that contradicted elements that were considered established cannon.

Examples of this would be some of the boo-boos in one of the Best TOS-based movies, The Wrath of Khan. Like, the fact that Chekov wouldn't be recognized by Khan, or that the Reliant's sensors were scanning Seti Alpha 6 for microbes . . . and missed a few dozen humans.

Now we have talented young filmmakers who want to make fan-based movies, but Paramount opposes the idea because it infringes on their copyrighted material. I understand that completely . . . but since they've often screwed up the official productions, it seems unfortunate that these loyal fans can't take a crack at it! Shocked

So, here's what I would suggest.

Suppose Paramount told all these independent filmmakers they could make any Star Trek film they wanted to . . . if they signed a contract agreeing to share a percentage of the profits that resulted from the production!

If a given production was poorly done and didn't make a profit, Paramount wouldn't get much out of the deal. But if it was well done and made a little money, Paramount would get a fair cut of the proceeds . . . without spending a dime!

I think the idea would please all parties concerned. The corporate "suits" would get money whenever a fan-based production was successful, but they wouldn't make a dime with the ones that failed.

Either way, they don't loose a penny!

Furthermore, the good ones could be promoted by Paramount, and this would increase their own profits, while the bad ones could be publicly condemned, and they could disconnect themselves from the failures!

It's a perfect way to serve the franchise which these bozos have mismanaged badly for so many years!

The Captain Pike film is still planned and I found a few more trailers for it by using a search engine.

On repeated viewing, I was able to do a screen grab of the Spock character.

Mr. Spock- played by Tom Berklund

I've found that many of the ama-films dedicated to STAR TREK have been of excellent quality in spite of the semi professional actors involved.

Your idea, Bud, is a good one, but unfortunately the "suits" in charge of Paramount would still be reticeint to go alone with it because of their lack of control over their intellectual property.

STAR TREK has grown from some 60's TV show to a very real way of life for a large number of devotees. Not that they lack a "real" life, but that the immensity of the concept has captured their imaginations. (A concept I totally understand!)
